— Daily Journal Entry 028 —
When it comes to writing and recording music in the home studio, there are a variety of challenges that await each musician. Sure, there’s the act of creating and recording the music itself. But sometimes before even to get to that part, there are other things that can stall your progress a bit. Things like, memory cards, cables, hard drives, cable adapters, etc.
Organization Simply Reduces Frustration
Sometimes it’s the little things that can stop a project before it evens gets started. If you are about to record a guitar part that requires just one more 1/4″ cable to hook up another pedal that you’ve introduced to the signal path, and you can’t find one, this makes for an aggravating situation. The solution for future episodes: Get your cables organized and in an easy to grab and go setup.
This Goes for Your Digital Files Also
But getting organized goes for the files you have on your (my) hardrive(s) as well. I’ve been a “piddler” for so long, I haven’t gotten in the habit of creating and maintaining proper original music folders. At least, not yet anyway. There’s the original file saved as a template file for whichever DAW you are using, there’s individual software instrument files and other sounds, and there’s the bounced down .wav file.
This Goes for Camera Files as Well
And if you are creating videos alongside your music, then there’s the video files and the audio files that go along with your video files. There’s quite a bit of organization that needs to take place for anyone trying to take this “content creation thing” seriously.
Even if you leave video making out of this equation, files can get lost quite easily if you are not attempting to manage them properly and paying attention while working with them.
To be continued…

Note: These “Daily Journal Entries” are part of a mini blog within the main blog where I make every effort to publish a 250+ word post per day on top of the regular, longer posts. The idea is to just create a daily habit of publishing written content. And also, to try and become a better overall writer… We’ll see…
