Music in the Holy Bible

— Daily Journal Entry 025 —

I know that music is extraordinarily powerful and an important part of Christian worship services, but I didn’t realize just how much it was referred to in the Holy Bible. According to where you look in your searching, who you talk to, and how you interpret certain versus of scripture, there’s anywhere from 400-1000+ different versus that refer to music in some way, shape, or form. Eventually, I want to write a more thorough post on this subject. I guess one could write a book on this subject with enough deliberate research (hmmm…).

Music’s Importance is Stressed Throughout the Bible

Most of the references are in the Old Testament as it is much larger than the New Testament. And, of course, there’s the Book of Psalms that seems to delve heavily into the subject matter. But there are also many New Testament versus that refer to the importance of singing praises to our Lord and Savior as well as to each other in His name for the purposes of uplifting one another.

How Are Humans Able to understand Music?

I think it’s safe to say that music if extreme importance in the Hebrew Holy Bible. And, for me personally, I find it difficult to believe that we as human beings have access and the ability to create music (in any form) by accident. I strongly believe that our ability to understand and feel rhythmic structures, to understand the often incredibly complex music theory environment (scales, chords, major, minor, add9, augmented this and that, flats, sharps, etc.) came from an infinite God.

Einstein, a Musician?

Even Einstein has been noted as saying that if he had not been a physicist, he would have probably been a musician. A testament to how scientific and complex music really is underneath – once you really dive into it. Apparently, he was somewhat of an accomplished musician in his own right. I don’t think he created any well-known original content (could be wrong here) but could hold his own amongst other classically taught musicians.

To be continued…

Note: These “Daily Journal Entries” are part of a mini blog within the main blog where I make every effort to publish a 250+ word post per day on top of the regular, longer posts. The idea is to just create a daily habit of publishing written content. And also, to try and become a better overall writer… We’ll see…
