I love knives of all sorts. Pocket knives, hunting, fishing, utility knives, auto openers, fixed blades, OTF (Out the Front), scuba, survival, tactical… whatever the case may be. But at the end of the day (well, at the end of my days, these days), sometimes all you really need is a small pocket knife (if that – sometimes).
A Very Low Profile
The Buck Mini is a very slender knife that can easily slip into anyone’s front pocket no matter how shallow the pocket may be. You can also put it in small pouches and wallets without any issues. Despite its small size, it’s quite a strong, durable knife that can take a beating. It is as sharp as any standard Buck knife in the typical consumer price range. I think I paid roughly $50.00 for it at the time.
Thin Is the Name of the Game
So, if you need a knife that no one will ever know you are carrying, the Mini might just be that knife. It’s basically as thin as the blade itself. Well, ok, the blade has to be stored somewhere, but the handle is a very thin handle, and quite the attractive handle at that.
Movie: Insomnia
Another reason this particular knife comes to mind at the moment is that I am almost 100% sure I saw it in a movie. Ever seen the movie Insomnia, with Al Pacino and Robin Williams? Remember the scene when Al Pacino is trying to recover a bullet from the dog he shot in an effort to obfuscate the evidence? He needs to replace the bullet he accidentally shot his co-worker with with the bullet he shot this dog with, which comes from a different, unregistered gun.
Can Carry in Business Attire
At any rate, the knife he uses looks exactly like the Buck Mini. It makes a lot of sense as to why he would carry that particular knife. His character is a detective who maintains a casual suit-and-tie appearance. Therefore, he’s not (normally) going to be wearing some multitool on his belt or some other large knife or tool. And the Mini is a great choice for his limited-resources-type situation. He can maintain his business attire.
I got tired of trying to find a YouTube clip of that scene; otherwise, I would have included a link in this post. I’m sure there’s one out there. Almost every scene in almost every movie has its own mini clip on YT. I just couldn’t find it.

Other Knives I’ve Seen on the Screen
I don’t have a picture of this knife at the moment, but I have a Gerber Guardian. And that knife was used in the movie Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. I tried to find that clip as well, but no luck. It wasn’t a prominent scene. Only someone who owns the knife would really care.
The knife is a boot knife/dagger of sorts. However, it also has quite the low profile. This is a fixed-blade knife that you can actually carry, sheath and all, in your front pocket (I think she wore it on her boot). Most front pockets, anyway. And it’s not to be underestimated. It’s small, but it’s a full-tang knife, sharp and just a good carry, especially if you like fixed-blades for everyday carry.
