One Musician’s Life Told in Vinyl

— Daily Journal Entry 032 —

Owning 300+ vinyl albums these days is a rare thing indeed. Sure, there are lots of people that post their collections (as I’m doing for my Dad at the moment), but as a whole, it’s rather rare to accumulate such a collection. Some people have none, some have a few, some have thousands, and some have 300…

It Takes Patience and Time

Let’s start with what it takes to collect this amount in the first place, especially as a member of the economical middle class, raising a family, paying the bills, buying decent gifts at birthdays and Christmas time, etc. … To make a long story short… IT TAKES TIME…

I Almost Forgot the 45’s

And, I’m not just talking about the vinyl albums, but he also has several hundred 45’s still in the collection. He couldn’t just walk into a record store every day, week, or month and make a purchase. Otherwise he would probably have thousands upon thousands. These purchases had to be carefully thought out.

It’s All About the Experience

And let’s remember, buying vinyl when that was the only way to purchase your favorite artists’ music, was a time when listening to music was an EVENT rather than “a thing” you did for 2-3 minutes and then on to the next “thing.” When you listened to a vinyl record (and I can vouch for this, when listening to Boston’s self-title first album, or R.E.M.’s, Dead Letter Office, etc.), you listened to the WHOLE THING in one sitting (usually). People growing up today don’t get to experience that unless they make an effort to seek it out. We just don’t EXPERIENCE MUSIC the way we used to as a society.

To be continued…

Note: These “Daily Journal Entries” are part of a mini blog within the main blog where I make every effort to publish a 250+ word post per day on top of the regular, longer posts. The idea is to just create a daily habit of publishing written content. And also, to try and become a better overall writer… We’ll see…

    — Daily Journal Entry 018 — The Sigma is another one of my past guitars that I cannot believe I let go. It originally cost me about $250 (I think) over 35 years ago, and I only got, maybe $100 for it on eBay. This was back during a time when I thought I was…

    — Daily Journal Entry 010 — I’ve found over the years that I really like to use cruise control when driving. Even while driving around town in a 35-mile-an-hour zone.
