And in my opinion, takes a bit more effort than your typical “talking head” video. Let’s take a really basic beginner guitar tutorial, for example. In order to make a fairly decent engaging video, one needs to film himself playing the guitar in a full, waist-up (or full body shot) position as well as filming a close-up of the fretting or strumming / picking hand. So, there’s that… But for any other type of instrument there’s usually some sort of setup that needs to take place before and during the filming…

Video and Audio Production Pressure
But then, there’s also the audio… As musician-related content goes, I would think most viewers expect better than average audio quality, which certainly puts the pressure on the video creator.
If you are creating screenshot tutorials of your favorite DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), then you need to be familiar with some sort of screenshot capturing software and how to implement it in your tutorial. Not to mention, you need to ensure that you are using software that captures system audio in the process (or ways around it if it does not capture the audio from your computer).
Talking Head Takes Less Effort
In my humble opinion… For a typical talking head video, you are just talking into the camera, maybe throwing in a little b-roll to eliminate the monotony, maybe some screenshotting (probably don’t need the audio in most cases), and that’s about it. Sure, talking into a camera with decent delivery skills takes practice, and I’m not discounting that, but still, there’s less involvement overall.
Change My Niche?
I often wonder if I should abandon the “music thing” in an effort to find some other niche that I’m still genuinely interested in and give THAT a shot instead. After all, creating the content (once decided upon the niche) would often be easier, less intimidating, etc. For the most part, I feel the musical approach is still something that is uniquely “me.” I might not be the best musician in the world, but most of what I’m posting would be of my
own creation. Whereas another niche might just turn out to be me re-posting the exact same content as someone else. Sure, I would do so “in my own words and in my own way,” but still… It wouldn’t feel as “original.”
My Music Makes It Mine
At least with the music, if I’m covering a topic that has been covered on many occasions, I would normally be including an original music example that would serve to make the video “my own.”
