Ideas Are a Dime a Dozen

— Daily Journal Entry 020 —

Ok, so you’re sitting down, playing the guitar and gold strikes.  You have a new idea that you really love and so you ensure that you capture it in voice memos (if you’re using an iPhone), or wherever… That’s fine and dandy, but if you never get to turning that idea into a song, who cares?… I have so many (well, maybe not as many as some) “ideas,” that I don’t where to start when it comes to trying to finish one of them.  I know, I just need to grab one and go.  It’s almost as if people like me would be better off without these nice, easy tools to capture said ideas so we would have to either open up the DAW or turn on the multitrack to record it.  At least, then I’m inside the main recording environment, so MAYBE I’ll record more than just the one track of the idea.

Of course, even if these newer tools didn’t exist, I’d probably revert to using an old-school tape recorder, or something, instead of firing the DAW… Ya know there might be tons of wonderful music that’s out there just sitting on someone’s phone (or on a cassette) that never gets to see the light of day due to laziness, or doubt / fear, etc.  I’m sure this is the case for more than just music.

My only hope is that “one day” I’ll find that spark again and stick to it.  That’s part of the problem… I still like making music, but the push to finish something has seemed to have left me… “The Thrill is Gone” so-to-speak.  I think if I could just get a few completed tracks down, good or bad, just DONE, I’ll find that groove again.  We’ll see…

I try to remind myself also that it’s not only about me finishing MY piece of music, but if I’m also making a video of the process, there’s a small chance that I could be helping someone else out at the same time.  Again, it ultimately comes down to caring enough to do something about it.  I haven’t lost complete faith in moving forward in this musical journey, but there are times when it does seem in short supply… I’m certainly NOT looking for a HIT of any kind.  I’m barely writing full songs with lyrics these days anyway.  Just laying down a guitar or piano idea and finishing it inside Logic Pro (or Pro Tools, or wherever), perhaps along with the Native Instruments Library.  That’s all I’m looking to do – ever… at this point.  But nothing happens if you never turn on the computer…

Until Next Time,

Note: These “Daily Journal Entries” are part of a mini blog within the main blog where I make every effort to publish a 250+ word post per day on top of the regular, longer posts. The idea is to just create a daily habit of publishing written content. And also, to try and become a better overall writer… We’ll see…

    — Daily Journal Entry 019 — I should make a better effort to get back into programming my drum tracks as a more intentional endeavor. Of course, playing an actual set would be the most ideal thing to do, but that’s just not on my realistic radar at the moment. I’m jealous of a few…

  • Going “Off Topic”

    — Daily Journal Entry 033 — Will going off topic in a blog really hurt a creator in the short, or even the long, run? On the one hand I could care less, and on the other, I do kind of think about it on occasion. First off, what is, “Going off topic?” That would…

  • Making Musician-Related YouTube Videos Takes Effort

    — Daily Journal Entry 037 — And in my opinion, takes a bit more effort than your typical “talking head” video. Let’s take a really basic beginner guitar tutorial, for example. • What is the CAGED System for Guitar?

    — Daily Journal Entry 009 — I never knew what the “CAGED System” was for guitar until about four, or five years ago. I had learned the concept of E-Form and A-From barre chords many years ago, and from that learned that there were elements of chords, and chord voicings that you can move up…
