Forgiving Yourself When You Miss Your Goal

— Daily Journal Entry 035 —

OK, I knew this would happen eventually.  I set out on a reasonable and respectable goal to write at least 250+ words per day for the next 365 days, and I’ve already missed a couple of days… twice, so four days in total. I’ve asked myself: should I just start over (again), or continue on where I left off?  And I’ve chosen to just continue where I left off.  One full year is quite a long time to commit to anything, every single day of that year.  Although I had good (enough) reasons for missing my writing deadlines, I still… missed them.

Instead of getting all bent out of shape, I’m just keeping in mind that no one but me cares about this process, about the “goal” I’ve set for myself.  I would like to say that “I wrote 250+ words every single day for one year, and this is the result.” And, I can still actually say that after 365 days have passed.  I just have to acknowledge and own up to the fact that I missed a few days during that time period.

I guess I could hold back on revealing the conclusion of a 365-day period until I DO actually write for 365 consecutive days (just keep moving the start date), or… just admit to the messy journey that I attempted and “almost” completed without any hang-ups.  Either way, I think it’s a pretty good goal to have and to have accomplished at some level.  After all, the only goal here is to become a better writer, and one that can produce material consistently.

So far, I’m finding that the real challenge is to maintain each 250+-word minimum post at around 250 words.  Most are tending to go over 300 words (like this one – 326).  I find that I don’t want to stop elaborating.  I might as well have made a real 1200-1500 post out of some of these Daily Journal entries.

Until Next Time,

Note: These “Daily Journal Entries” are part of a mini blog within the main blog where I make every effort to publish a 250+ word post per day on top of the regular, longer posts. The idea is to just create a daily habit of publishing written content. And also, to try and become a better overall writer… We’ll see…
